Roll Wave
On Saturday Tulane played South Alabama at the 30 thousand seater on campus Yulman stadium. It wasn't exactly like a proper English football atmosphere but it was certainly entertaining.
Kick off was a lovely 7pm meaning there was plenty of time to get the beers in before kick off and with it being America everyone was out going to bars or to glorified looking year 9 parties at frat houses. Beers before the game was similar to England in the fact that there was people drinking lots in a short amount of time however it felt more like being at a club rather than the pub before a match, with loud dance music playing 24/7 it was hardly like going to the Carpenters arms to drink 8 pints of Carling before West Ham play.
Of course just like everything in America, the stadium was big although by American standards Yulman is a modest thirty thousand ( some stadiums such as Louisiana State's stadium seats a monster 102 thousand people). For some context Wembley stadium which is where England’s national team play holds 90k. Yulman, despite being small for an American football stadium, is bigger than seven Premier league teams' grounds despite Tulane not being known for it's sports.
The game was good fun and a much different atmosphere to an english game but Tulane students were loud and supportive of their school. The student section was full and with that section being free for students until it's full it seemed like a good deal. Now that seventy thousand a year isnt looking so bad right.
There were two things however that annoyed me at the game: the stops for adverts despite it being a lowkey college game and the lack/poor chants from Tulane students. The only chants were from people humming along to seven nation army, people still couldnt seem to grasp the fact you're meant to say a players name, however the chants of cousin fuckers was a nice touch to the terraces.
Il defo be back next week to see Tulane play Ole Miss which should be the biggest game of the season against a big SEC School.
